The worst thing about politics is still the politicians. Sometimes, a cliche hangs on for a reason. I watched the debates tonight and overall, I was a little disappointed. I thought McCain came off especially badly tonight. Can’t they give him a spray on tan or something so he doesn’t look like the spector of death? It’s bad enough to listen to him, but the guy seriously creeps me when I look at him. He also seemed a little put off by the debates. I know his camp had been trying to reschedule all week, but there’s no need to be annoyed that your presence is required at an event that will sway voters your way and send them running in the other direction.

And aside from looking like the Grim Reaper’s surly younger brother, the incessant name dropping and veteran touting by McCain was nauseating. Here’s a tip for you McCain: in the future, when you are asked about your feelings on Iran, leave former President Reagan out of your answer. For starters, in these here parts, you mention Reagan and people will go a 90 minute rant about “Reaganomics.” Seriously. I am about as liberal as a person can get, but I remember in vivid detail how “Reaganomics” affected my childhood (we ended up homeless and living in a car across from a crack house). Also, there was a little scandal called Iran-Contra. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? Maybe not the best references to put in peoples’ minds when attempting to express your view and work in a name dropping at the same time.

Switching gears, I found Obama to be well-spoken. He didn’t say anything that made me want to punch a puppy. He was a little bland, I wish he had shown more personality. I was also extremely pleased that someone actually mentioned that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the attacks on 9/11, and not Iraq. I was most sure that that nugget of information had been erased from public memory.

So for this debate, in my book, Obama is the winner. He came off like a human, and not the world’s old android.
